Craniofacial Fellowship Training

The Dallas Craniofacial Center at Medical City is one of the busiest craniofacial centers in the United States. It is comprised of multiple craniofacial surgeons, working together with an extensive craniofacial team. At the current time, there are three separate craniofacial fellowships offered at Medical City: one with Dr. Fearon, one with Dr. Genecov and one with Dr. Byrd. Interviews must be arranged individually with each fellowship director. The following description applies only to the fellowship offered by Dr. Fearon.

Dr. Fearon’s practice is pretty much limited to treating pediatric congenital craniofacial anomalies and children with clefts. Surgery is scheduled 5-days a week, and in a typical year, fellows can expect to participate in over 100 intracranial cases. A significant experience in congenital craniofacial orthognathic surgery can also be expected, along with an exposure to general pediatric plastic surgery, microtia reconstruction, and skull base surgery. This fellowship experience is unique by virtue of a very focused emphasis on treating craniosynostosis, especially the syndromic synostoses. Fellows also have the opportunity to work with multiple surgeons (Drs. Barcelo, Burns, Byrd, Genecov, Ha, and Hobar, among others), offering the ability to see different ways of approaching craniofacial problems. Combined teaching conferences are scheduled, bringing together all the craniofacial fellows and surgeons at Medical City. In addition, fellows are encouraged to complete a research project targeted for presentation and publication.

The fellowship with Dr. Fearon is only offered to applicants who will have completed an accredited plastic surgery residency, and will be board-eligible in plastic surgery. Fellows are required to get an independent Texas license (our office will assist with this process) as some independent surgical experience is possible. This fellowship is ideally suited to those applicants who have received a strong background in plastic surgery, and are now interested in seeking intensive craniofacial training, or for those who may have already completed a craniofacial fellowship elsewhere, and wish to gain more focused training in the less commonly seen syndromic synostoses. This salaried fellowship includes health and malpractice insurance.
